چکیده

This article gives a detailed quantitative account of Samoan root phonotactics. In particular, count data is given in eleven tables of segment frequencies (i.e., consonants, short and long vowels, diphthongs) and frequencies of combinations of segments (i.e., syllable types, consonant-vowel combinations, V-V and C-C combinations across syllables). Systematic patterns of overand under-representation of these structures in the lexicon are documented and related to prior research. Beyond the detailed frequency facts presented here, new empirical patterns documented include positional preferences for bilabials and non-labial sonorants, extensions of a known pattern of gradient vowel assimilation, and identification of a role for manner and segment order in consonant co-occurrence restrictions.

The Norse Myth of Odin - digital art series on thought and memory

Art-making has always shared with archeology the challenge of digging for meaning. But, whereas the archeologist digs deeper and deeper to unearth the past, digital art adds layer upon layer, projecting images and ideas into the future. Art-making, like myth, taps into the archetypes we all share, reliving mental journeys via story-telling. As I create individual images, they flow, one into ano...

Rooting traits of peanut genotypes differing in drought tolerance under drought stress

The effects of two water regimes (well-watered condition or drought stress) on root length, root surface area and root volume were tested on two peanut genotypes (the drought-resistantvariety HuaYu 22 (HY22) and the drought-sensitive variety HuaYu 23 (HY23)), measured 101days after sowing. The roots were sampled from the upper (0–40 cm) and deeper (40–100 cm)soil layers. Root diameter was measur...

Similarity and phonotactics in Arabic

The statistical patterns of language are systematic linguistic data which must be accounted for in linguistic theory. The phonotactics of the Arabic verbal roots are presented as a case study. In Arabic, the acceptability of a verbal root is gradiently dependent on the similarity of homorganic consonant pairs within the root. We propose the stochastic constraint model of phonological patterning...
